Gerard Corbiau

  Film Director (b. September 19, 1941).Gérard Corbiau was born in Brussels in 1941. He began his film-making career at the Belgian French-language television company RTBF in 1968, making documentary reports for various programmes, specialising in music from 1980 onwards. He won the television critics’ Crystal Aerial Award for his films Sax (1981) and A la recherche de S (1983). His first feature film, Le maître de musique (“The Music Master”), starring operatic bass-baritone José Van Dam as retired singer Joachim Dallyrac, was both a critical and commercial success in 1987, and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film. For his 1994 film Farinelli , he worked with technical experts to re-create the sound of a castrato singer. The film was also nominated for the Oscar for the Best Foreign-Language Film and won the 1995 Golden Globe for the Best Foreign-Language Film. In 2000, he released his most ambitious film, Le Roi Danse, which followed the relationship between King Louis XIV and the musician Jean-Baptiste Lully, and included huge crowd scenes filmed at the Palace of Versailles. It was nominated for three Césars and won the Golden Frog at the Lodz Film Festival. His 2003 television film Saint Germain ou la Négotiation won the Best Adapted Screenplay Prize at the Monte Carlo Literature and Film Forum in 2004. His most recent feature film, as yet unreleased, is José Van Dam, 25 ans après a film biography of his friend and the star of his first feature film. Corbiau is an Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres (France) and an Officier de l’Ordre de la Couronne (Belgium).
