Machiavel

 Heavy-rock group

Machiavel is a Belgian heavy-rock group, currently made up of five members: Mario Guccio (vocals), Thierry Plaes (guitar), Roland De Greef (bass), Marc Ysaye (drums & vocals) and Hervé Borbé (keyboards). The group’s debut album Machiavel was released in 1976, when the group comprised Ysaye, De Greef and two others, and played “Eurock” music, in the style of Yes, Supertramp and Genesis. Guccio joined the group for their second album Jester in 1977, which consolidated their position in Belgium. Their third album Mechanical Moonbeams (1978) earned them a gold disc and contained the hit single Rope Dancer. The sixth album New Lines , released in 1980 was the group’s first to sell well outside Belgium, driven by the hit single Fly and the group toured Spain, Germany, France and the Netherlands. However, their eighth album, Break Out ,produced in the USA and released in 1981, flopped, and when the group’s instruments and technical equipment were stolen during their US tour, they decided to split up. In 1987, the former members of the group re-formed Machiavel with a new keyboards player, and released The Cry of Pleasureand album in which the individual musical preferences of its members had strong influences. The group played a couple of festivals before splitting up again in 1990. EMI, Machiavel’s recording label, managed to maintain interest in the group by releasing live concert recordings and compilation albums during the 1990s, when the members of the groups were playing with other bands. The organisers of the 1996 Francofolies de Spa festival managed to persuade Machiavel to re-form for the festival and a “Farewell Tour”, and EMI released 20th Anniversary Machiavel: The Very Best Of., a greatest-hits album. The tour was a sell-out and the enthusiasm of the fans persuaded the group to record the albums Virtual Sun and Machiavel Live (1999), Welcome to Paradise (2003) and 2005 (2005). Machiavel is now a stalwart of the European summer rock festival scene, and more than 50,000 fans attended concerts during the 2005 tour.
