Professional tennis player (b 1969)
Jean-Michel Saive was born into a table-tennis-mad family in Liège : his mother had become Belgian Ladies’ Champion while pregnant with him. He was selected for the Belgian national junior team aged 13, and has been the Belgian Number One player since 1985. He was the world number one player from 9 February 1994 to 8 June 1995 and from 26 March 1996 to 24 April 1996. He has won more than 50 personal titles, including European Champion in 1994, 15 Belgian Championships, and Champion at the Qatar Open in 1996 and 2002. He captained the Belgian team to the European League titles in 1994 and 1995, and his club, La Villette, to the European Champions’ Cup on seven occasions. He represented Belgium in the 1988,1992,1996,2000, 2004 and 2012 Olympic Games, won the Belgian Sportsman of the Year prize in 1991, and the UNESCO Fair Play Prize in 1989.
