Marguerite Bervoets

(1914-44).Marguerite Bervoets was a school teacher in Tournai at the time of the German invasion in 1940. She joined the Belgian resistance and helped publish the underground newspaper “La Délivrance”. She and a friend were captured while taking photos of a German air force base in 1942, and she was sent to the German military prison at Wolfenbüttel, where she was beheaded on 7 August 1944. Her letter of farewell to her family is included in many resistance literature anthologies. The Athénée Royal Marguerite Bervoets (Royal Marguerite Bervoets School) in Mons is named after her and was attended by Belgian tennis stars Justine Henin, Oliver Rochus and Christophe Rochus.
