Popular Walking

Out for the day! Let's start with the easy bit.

There are rewarding rambles to be found almost everywhere in Wallonia.

Many of the paths are voluntarily maintained by the French-speaking Federation of Popular Walking (FFBMP), which has 200 affiliated clubs whose members are most active at weekends.

An unusual feature of walking in the region are the numerous 'temporary trails' that appear on Saturdays and Sundays, with signs erected by club members, and are extensively used by organised groups. Magically, the signs disappear again by Monday morning, and normal life resumes.

The Federation (www.ffbmp.be) encourages visitors from abroad – and especially from the UK – who share their passion for the countryside and bring a fresh perspective to their weekend outings.
