Approximately 25 minutes from Spa is the town of Chaudfontaine with the only naturally hot water springs in Belgium. These were originally recognised in 1673 when local people first took the waters, but it is only with the recent conversion of an elegant 19 th century chateau located close to the Chaudfontaine source that this restorative spring has started to attract visitors from afar.
Facilities at what is now the very cosy and exclusive Chateau des Thermes, which is set in a landscaped parc bordering the river Vesdres, include a Thermal Space, a Beauty Space and a Gastronomic restaurant.
The Thermal Space consists of an outdoor swimming pool filled with spring water permanently heated to 34°C with bubble sources that provide bathers with an invigorating hydro-massage, three saunas (with one for colour therapy, another for aromatherapy), a steam bath, cold foot baths (perfect for dipping feet into after a sauna), a relaxation room and infrared lamp treatment area.
The Beauty Space on the first floor of the Chateau is a relaxing cocoon. Here, the spa's staff dispenses all kinds of fantastic hydro and thermal therapies, massages and beauty treatments, ranging from traditional favourites to the most recent innovations, including phytobiodermie a unique method incorporating the principles of traditional Chinese medicine with natural skincare products from Switzerland and chromatherapy.
Chaudfontaine is also ideally located for long walks in the crisp country air of the Ardennes, while a whole host of other distractions (such as museums, the largest pedestrianised shopping area in Europe and a great weekend flea market) are to be found in nearby Liege.
